● Mind Images 1997 ~ 2009
Life is full of speakable and unspeakable feelings.
Some joys are unfelt at the very moment, and some sorrows are realized only years later with reflection.
I register my feelings with paintings, and my sentiments about the world, nature and life are transformed into somewhat abstract composition in the paintings. Dark or light colors, thick or thin ink traces represent some inexpressible delicate feelings.
● Impression 1997 ~ 2010
I like watching nature for its grandeur, versatility, mystery and grotesqueness.
I am like a mental traveler, watching the cosmos mutation with a moving and shuttling eye. The emerging black or white or light color images are like old pictures, intending to evoke people’s remote memories of the earth.
● Black Box 1998 ~ 2010
Black box is a recorder.
When I face a blank canvas, some ideas brew, however, color rinsing and ink accumulating are unpredictable, and I make the choice following the situation of the very moment, in consequence, the representation of images is an accumulation of unrepeatable fragments. This theme concerns my observation of nature’s mutation, and this series record my feelings and comprehension!
● Time Album 2002 ~ 2003
Fan Kuan of the Northern Song Dynasty said: “It’s better to learn from Nature than from ancient masters; it’s even better to learn from the source of heart than from Nature.” I drew my inspiration mostly from nature, however, the result is often the representation of my own mind images.
Time Album was inspired by the masterpiece of Northern Song Dynasty Travelling among Streams and Mountains. With grotesque mountains and huge rocks standing at the center of the painting, Fan Kuan paints mountains, rocks, streams, forests, earth surface and climate with a detailed brushwork. However, I differ my paintings from his by focusing on the evolution of geological strata itself. I tried to explore the interaction and waxing and waning between time and materials through outward appearances of soaking, eroding and piling, and inward mutation of melting, sedimenting and crystallizing.
● Time Valley 2004 ~ 2011
This series is composed with two visual elements: the waxing and waning of “water” and “stone”. I tried to represent invisible time concept via visible appearances and to extend forms of landscape paintings and representing aspects of ink painting.
I imagine that time is a shadowless long river, and the earth that she flows through, soaks, erodes, sediments and shapes should be splendid and marvelous.
My different creations possess different levels and view points, for I want to raise, extend and broaden horizons and integrate vast forms and various metamorphoses of nature.
● Flower Spirits 2004 ~
A flower’s life is short, while the emotions it evokes are long-lasting.
My intention is to represent spirit via flower forms, so that we can see the multiple facets of life.
I didn’t want to paint flowers in a realistic way, but to represent flowers’ hidden spirit via petals’ forms, quantity and expanding ways.
I used techniques of rinsing and layering of ink materials, so that flower shapes possess a semi transparent brittle quality, and the colors change freely.
I wish beholders would hear the light and delicate whispers of flowers and comprehend the unique and everlasting value of each life.
● Age Calendar 2005 ~
A lunar year is divided into 24 seasonal periods, during which I experience cold and heat, passing thus the 4 seasons. The earth with its multiple faces would allow me to have some seasonal thoughts of my own, I think.
The title “Age Calendar ” refers to seasonal periods, while in reality it provides personal imagination and interpretation. Seasonal landscape is different everywhere, and the climate doesn’t always remain the same, nevertheless, stories of the seasons are always chanted in the universe.
Let me also contemplate and sing my part as a painter.
● Landscape Mutation 2007 ~
I tried to extend mutation of time and space via group painting, in order to represent nature’s wonders in a more imaginative way.
I used texture-strokes to render objects and texture, in addition, I used techniques of accumulation, copying, eroding, flowing and shaping of ink and water: the result is amazing.
Nature’s changes are remarkable and unpredictable, and time flows by without traces, do we comprehend something from this?
● Water Rippling 2008 ~
This series tries to express water’s flowing characteristics and transparency, and to represent an aesthetics of leisure and a lyric state.
The more life is in a sophisticated atmosphere, the stronger the desire of seeking the purity. When we watch the water flowing slowly and stabilizing, our mind is at ease and remains crystal clear.
Via the rippling of water, I arrange points and lines and liberate my thoughts, emptying the space.
I hope that would be the place where the water washes and the poetry gathers.
● Time River Gravel 2010 ~
Flowing water is like a time river
Hard stones shaped by time river achieve marvelous forms, textures and colors.
And the water would dissipate at the end.
Only the washed gravel remains to witness the tempering process.
